People say that the earth and the life on it will perish on 2012. Before striking fear in the hearts of all, it is best to fully understand the nature of the 2012 theory and the facts that support it.

The Mesoamerican calendar was used in Central America, back at the time of exploration, before the Europeans came. This is also called the Long Count Calendar where its inventors started to number the days from zero. This day, according to them is an end of an era, a day where a previous world was destroyed and a new one was created. This calendar system is closely related to the Ancient Mayans.

The day zero is learned to be about the 11th of August, 3114 BC. To summarize, the Long Count calendar of the Mayans is finite. Its abrupt end marks December 21 or 23 of the year 2012.

Astrologers and psychics side with the Mayan prediction that the December solstice of 2012 is the Doomsday. Many are now believers of the 2012 theory, also known as the end of days because of the several Mayan predictions that actually happened: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, wars and famine. Even the predictions of the long dead Nostradamus—many of which are perfectly accurate, are congruent with the Mayan’s.

Scientists believe that the Ancient Mayans, being brilliant astronomers, were basing their calendar count on the Galactic Alignment, a rare event in which the sun, earth and planets align with the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Both the Mayans and Nostradamus attribute this alignment to catastrophe, metaphorically referring to the galaxy’s center as a vortex or a hole that will feed on the planet.

Some religiously faithful and non-believers to the Doomsday 2012 theory are already shaken by the “fulfillment of predictions” that disasters get more frequent and devastating as the years approach 2012. There have been strong hurricanes as predicted, Katrina being the best example. The stronger typhoons are particularly caused by man’s activities that are detrimental to the environment.

Science explains that the Galactic Alignment provides no threat for cataclysm. The danger of a magnetic reversal or the shifting of the earth’s poles is still out of site for maybe another hundreds of years. No scientific data supports any earth catastrophe, much more the 2012 theory of destruction.

Perhaps the best thing to do is enjoy life, be prepared for any disaster and help take care of the earth. The decision of believing the 2012 theories rests on the individual.
