The predictions of a cataclysmic 2012 which will eventually lead to the world’s end originated from the Mayan Civilization, one that had shamans and astronomers who closely studied the movements of the earth and the heavenly bodies. Their Long Count calendar is based on their astronomy, and it ends on a particular date. The date corresponds to December 21 or 23 of the Gregorian calendar which most of us are using today.
Other predictions made by astrologers and psychics speak of the 2012 Doomsday too, including those of the famous Nostradamus. They talk of natural calamities of unusual intensities and occurring at higher frequencies: storms, tidal waves, tsunamis and earthquakes. At the culmination is the end of the world, together the possible extinction of life. This is predicted to be brought by a heavenly body or planetoid colliding with the earth.
Several organizations and websites are formed for educating people on how to survive 2012. Some even are constructing shelters to withstand the predicted calamities. Some say that the mountains are the safest hideouts because the winds cannot penetrate through mountain ranges and tsunamis cannot reach the heights. Certain websites include celebrity members and believers to gather more believers, in a way effective but to an extent sensationalizing the coming of calamities which are not yet scientifically proven to be coming.
Scientists argue that the predictions lack scientific basis. However, they associate the end of the Mayan’s Long Count calendar to a galactic event and not the end of days. On December 21 of 2012, the earth, the sun, the planets and the center of the Milky Way will be in one straight line. Many inferred that such alignment will disrupt the magnetic field of the earth but scientists say that it is very unlikely. On another issue, scientists say that the prediction that a heavenly body will collide with the earth on 2012 is very unlikely to happen too.
So far, how to survive 2012 is primarily a question of what to believe—will it really be the end of the physical world and the life with it?
Contrary to popular belief, the descendants of the Mayans do not believe that the end of their ancient calendar means that it is the destruction of the world. They believe 2012 is a day of re-creation, a time when the psyche and philosophy of mankind will be purified and be changed for the better.
