Surviving 2012
Defiance of Extinction: Surviving 2012
People are now creating a huge buzz everywhere on issues about surviving 2012 and the cataclysm predicted to ravage the earth on that year. Many are now seeking for possible shelters and stocking supplies for calamities. This rush is for believers of the Doomsday interpretation of the accounts of an ancient civilization. It needs a well informed decision on the plan of actions for surviving 2012 and, in the first place, to identify if there is a need at all.

The prediction that the world will end on a day on December 2012, is rooted from the accounts of the Mayans, a Mesoamerican civilization that rose in the pre-European conquest period. Because they are brilliant astronomers, they learned much about the movements of the earth and the heavenly bodies; and with respect to it, they formed a calendar. The end of that calendar corresponds to December 21, 2012 which is interpreted as the end of the world. Predictions of famous psychics and astrologers including that of Nostradamus said that 2012 will be a time of war and of international dispute and great natural calamities.
Though scientists disagree with the validity of the predictions of Doomsday due to lack of scientific evidence, they are aware of a rare event of 2012 which is the aligning of the earth with the sun, planets and the center our galaxy. It is still not proven but the alignment may affect the earth’s magnetic field.
Now, what would be the cataclysms on 2012?
The magnetic field reversal of the earth has happened many times before, in periods of more than 600,000 years and during the reversal, for still unconfirmed reasons, there is a mass extinction of species. This being the event with the only scientific proof can be fatal to many species including humans. But most scientists argue that it will not happen, maybe in the next 100,000 years.
Many organizations are being built for purposes of surviving 2012. Even the internet has advertisements of groups claiming that they know how to survive the Doomsday—the fall of a meteor, strong earthquakes and hurricanes. Some are already migrating to the mountains to avoid the huge tsunamis. But the predictions are still merely predictions of a future that is yet to come. The best way of surviving 2012 is to do something to prevent the planet’s destruction, and that is to take care of the environment.
